Can an AI agent buy from my Shopify store through Shop Pay? Since October 13, 2026, yes, through a single MCP connection. Shopify’s developer changelog says Shop MCP lets an agent “search Shopify Catalog, build carts, and complete Shop Pay checkout.” It requires no merchant action and no API key for search.
What launched
Shop MCP is live at https://mcp.shop.com, with a skill description at https://mcp.shop.com/skill.md that MCP-compatible agents can read. Per the changelog, its tools fall into four flows:
- Search and product details:
search_catalog,lookup_catalogandget_productread from Shopify Catalog, which Shopify says holds over 1 billion products. - Sign-in with Shop: the shopper signs in once, and search uses their saved preferences.
- Carts and checkout: the agent builds a cart and creates a checkout at the store that sells the product. This works without sign-in. With a signed-in shopper, checkout can use saved addresses and Shop Pay, and the agent calls
complete_checkoutafter the shopper confirms the total and payment method. - Orders: for a signed-in shopper,
search_ordersfinds orders and tracking.
A shop CLI (npm install -g @shopify/shop) calls the same server, so you can run shop search against your own product names and see what an agent receives: store, price and stock status.
What changes for a merchant
Shopify’s stated reason: before Shop MCP, an agent could find a product in Catalog but had to send the shopper to the store’s website to pay, “which often caused drop-off.” Now a signed-in shopper can pay with saved Shop Pay details without leaving the agent.
Three details from the changelog matter to a store owner:
- Orders look normal. Orders placed through an agent “appear in the merchant’s Shopify admin like any other order.”
- No webhooks yet. There are no webhooks at launch, so agent builders must poll
get_checkoutfor status. - No action is required. Existing Catalog API integrations keep working unchanged.
Related: browser agents can complete eligible Shopify checkouts through WebMCP, and the older Global Catalog REST API stops serving traffic on November 2. Shop MCP is the MCP route for agents and apps.
What the changelog does not say
Be careful with the gaps. The changelog does not describe how a merchant opts out, how an agent is identified to the store, or what happens to products that fail Catalog’s data checks. It gives no volume figures. Treat the “1 billion products” as Shopify’s claim about Catalog, not a count of stores an agent can actually buy from today.
What a merchant can control is the data an agent reads: price and availability that are accurate and consistent, since the agent shows the shopper a total to confirm before it completes the purchase.
FAQ
Do I need to do anything for Shop MCP to work on my Shopify store?
No. Shopify’s changelog says no action is required, and existing Catalog API integrations keep working. The checkout runs at the store that sells the product, and the resulting order appears in the Shopify admin like any other.
Can an agent pay without the shopper signing in?
An agent can build a cart and create a checkout without sign-in. Saved addresses and Shop Pay need a signed-in shopper, and the agent completes the purchase only after the shopper confirms the total and payment method.
How do I see what an agent sees for my products?
Install the shop CLI with npm install -g @shopify/shop and run shop search with one of your product names. Shopify says each result shows the store, the price and whether the item is in stock.

A checkout route only helps if the store behind it is readable and consistent, which is what AgentReady scores: not whether an agent can find you, but whether it can buy.
