For a decade the job of an online store was to get a human to click Buy. In 2026 that assumption broke: the two largest assistants can now complete a purchase without the shopper ever landing on your site. The catch for merchants is that they do it on two separate rails that don’t talk to each other.
The two rails
- OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), built with Stripe, powers Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT. The shopper confirms and pays without leaving the chat; the merchant stays merchant-of-record.
- Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) powers checkout inside Google’s AI Mode and the Gemini app, via a persistent “Universal Cart,” with a broad slate of retail and payment partners.
Both are published as open specs — but there is no joint standard. A store that’s purchasable in ChatGPT is not automatically purchasable in Gemini, and vice versa.
What it means for your store
The practical consequence is blunt: to be buyable across both surfaces, most brands will need to support both protocols. Merchants on large platforms get a shortcut — Shopify, for instance, exposes both through its own integration — but the underlying requirement is the same everywhere:
- a clean, machine-readable product feed (accurate price, availability, variants);
- a checkout path an agent can drive end-to-end (the protocol integration);
- structured product data consistent with what the feed and page state.
None of that is discovery/SEO work. It’s transaction readiness — a different, more concrete competency, and the one most stores score zero on today.
Why “ranking well” no longer saves you
The same week, Google confirmed that AI Mode is becoming the default search experience for many users, with in-answer features that further reduce click-through to the underlying site. So even a store with excellent classic SEO can see the human click evaporate — while the agent transaction becomes the path that actually converts. That’s the shift AgentReady is built for: we don’t audit whether you’re recommended, we audit whether an agent can buy.
